Ellie lay in bed on her last night with Mimi’s pride, sleep eluding her. It wasn’t the first time she had been unable to sleep. In fact, no matter how hard Mimi worked her, it had become somewhat of a stranger to her since that fateful afternoon at Gabe’s. Tonight, it seemed more daunting though. She knew why. Tomorrow, she would be forced to return to her real life. The same life she had before she met Gabe, but now it seemed emptier.

He had brought so much to her life, in such a short time. He had given her a taste of what it felt like to finally belong to a family. She also caught a glimpse of what it felt like to be loved. A foreign experience outside of her brother. Then all of that had been unceremoniously ripped away from her in an instant, along with her heart. Her wolf and her healing abilities were all she had left as a reminder of what could have been. That and her memories of her time spent with the man she loved.

Her last five weeks with Mimi had been an intense, exhausting learning curve. Aden hadn’t been wrong when he had said that she was going to need all of her holidays to learn about being a healer. In her mind she still needed more training, but Mimi claimed the rest came with practise.

What Aden had failed to tell her was that healers don’t just seal cuts and mend broken bones. They also take the injured person’s pain away by taking it into themselves. Thankfully, Mimi had also taught her how to work through the pain, and then wash it away like dirt. Hot water had become her new best friend, along with the brick wall that was currently surrounding her mind. It would seem, like most healers, she was an empath. She could sense the emotions of everyone around her if she dropped her protective wall. It was just a shame she couldn’t build a wall around her own emotions.

After tossing and turning for several hours, Ellie looked over at the alarm clock beside the bed. She noted it would be another couple of hours before anyone would be up. Knowing there was no way she would sleep now, she crawled out of bed to start packing. Aden said he would pick her up just before lunch. She wanted all of her belongings together before anyone was out of bed. She intended on making a special breakfast as a thank you. She was going to miss everyone she had met during her time here, but especially Mimi, Donald, and their son. They were very special people.

By the time ten o’clock had rolled around, Aden drove up the long driveway. She had said her teary good-byes about five times over. She didn’t think she had any tears left. Apparently she was wrong. All it took was a simple statement from Aden, and her eyes sprung another leak.
